The water moccasin, also known as the cottonmouth, is one of the more dangerous forms of venomous snakes found in North America. These animals spend a significant amount of their time in the water, which is why they have received their common name.

The average adult cottonmouth is about 32 inches long, many grow to be more than twice that size, with the largest documented case being 74 inches, a specimen that was found at the Philadelphia zoo. These reptiles have a very blunt looking snout, and the top of their head actually protrudes over the front portion of their mouth.

Depending upon what area of the country they live, the color can vary greatly, making them color specific to the area where they live. For example, these snakes can have brown, olive green, black, gray, or yellow in color. The fact that they are found in several different colors often confuses people who think that they are another form of snake.

These snakes have a white belly, and have several different bands that go around the body and the face. The older that this snake gets, the lighter that the color of these bands becomes as taping into fade. It is not uncommon to see an older water moccasin that has no bands at all, as they have completely faded.
