DO RACCOONS COME OUT IN THE RAIN?

The weather is a powerful factor in determining wildlife behavior and can affect even small habits like eating hours, mating rituals, marking territory, hunting methods and the availability of prey.

This is true for woodland creatures such and mice, rabbits, raccoons and birds. All of these will generally seek the safety and shelter of their own underground dens, and birds will fly to their nests in the trees to shield their young from the storms.

Although raccoons generally like the water and brave it more than other animals, going so far as to fish and swim for hours at a time, they also take cover from the rain and hide away in their dens which can be hollow trees, old rabbit dens, or deep holes in the ground. A light drizzle will not immediately deter raccoons, who see no problem at all in continuing to forage and hunt while withstanding a few drops of water, but heavy rainfall, a fall in temperature and thunder will definitely drive them into their dens where they can cozy up with their family members and need not feel cold or wet.

Raccoon behavior is heavily affected by temperature and pressure. When the temperature rises, raccoons are more active and will hunt and mate with ease. When the temperature falls, they become much slower at their normal activities and tend to seek the comfort of their dens.

Since they aren't, strictly speaking, hibernators, they do still remain relatively active during cold months of snow or heavy rain fall, but they hunt less and rely more on the food sources they have managed to stash up in their dens for exactly these kinds of days. This also means that will be slower to react, sleep more and try to keep activity to a minimum so that they can save as much energy as they can.

During extended periods of heavy rain fall, raccoons will venture occasionally out of their dens for short hunting or foraging trips. They will brave the wet weather just long enough to ensure that they have enough food for a time and then quickly return to their dry, warm homes. Despite all this, heavy rain fall may also mean flooding, and this for raccoons is an added bonus because it enables them to fish and hunt for small animals like frogs and small animals that get flushed out. Since they are relatively good swimmers, this gives them an advantage over other animals.

Although raccoons are sturdy and resilient, constant rain fall may push them to look for new places to build their nests and will move out given the chance, so that breeding and raising their young can be done in warmer places where food is more abundant.
