How to use one-way exclusion funnels to remove pigeons without trapping them

Before placing the funnel in place:

The most important thing to remember is that before you can remove the birds from your premises, you need to make sure that there is no other way for them to enter your house. Make sure that even the smallest openings have been closed or blocked off and install as grate on your chimney if needed.

How do these funnels work?

One-way exclusion funnels work by blocking off all other options that might have been available to the birds, it gives them only one way out. Once this way has then been blocked, they will be unable to gain entry again.

What does it look like?

As the name suggests, the mesh wire cage has a smaller opening at the front, leading to a larger cage at the back. The openings in the mesh will depend on the size of the rodent/bird that you are looking to trap. You will need to place the cage with the opening facing the hole where the pigeons are exiting, the one way "door" will allow them to move in one direction, and in other words they will be able to get out, but not get back in again.

Getting rid of the birds without harming them

The last thing that anyone wants is a cage full of pigeons hanging from the side of your house. If you want to remove the pigeons, but not trap them in the cage you will simply need to remove the furthest wall of the cage. In doing so you will be putting a one ended funnel in place that will allow the birds to exit your house by going through the one-way door, they will then be able to fly out on the other side without being stuck inside the cage.

Once you think that the last of the birds have evacuated your premises, you will need to go and check to ensure that there are no nests containing babies. If this is the case, there should be a female bird with them as the male generally goes out in search of food while the female stays with the eggs. If this is the case, you will need to remove the nest and relocate them.

Easier said than done

A brooding female pigeon will not be easy to separate from her eggs. If possible, try to get her to exit through the one-way funnel; this will leave you with only the nest to deal with.

Finishing up
