How to Use a Snare Pole to Catch a Raccoon

Getting rid of a raccoon can be a very serious problem, especially if one has gotten into the main part of your home. If it were in your attic, you could use something like an exclusion funnel, setting it up on the outside of your home and then waiting for the raccoon to do the rest.

However, when the raccoon is in the main part of your home or is trapped in your chimney, then the problem becomes a lot more challenging. You can't wait for it to simply leave your living room and, if it is trapped in the chimney, you don't know how it is going to get out. This is where you need the snare pole.

What Is a Snare Pole?

While not realizing it, you likely already know exactly what a snare pole is. This is a device that is a long pole with a noose at the end. The noose can be loosened or tightened simply by pulling on the lever that is at the other end of the snare pole from the noose.

If you have seen animal control agents in action, you frequently see them use this device to catch stray or dangerous dogs, or other kinds of wild animals. It is an extremely effective tool to use as long as you are safe and know what you are doing.

Practice First

If you are going to get a snare pole to catch a raccoon, you may not have a lot of time to try to see how this thing works. Plus, you likely have not purchased one to have sitting around your home just in case a raccoon ever got into your home. You are learning on the fly, and that can be a real challenge.

Before trying it on the raccoon, practice with some object in your yard. It does not need to be an animal. Simply something you can practice trying to get the lasso part of the loop around quickly. Protect Yourself

These are wild animals that will act in wild and erratic ways. They may try to claw or scratch you, and the critter will be wild once you get that noose around its neck. You need to make sure you have heavy duty gloves on to protect your hands and to ensure that you have a tight grip on the pole.

Also, wear clothing that covers all of your exposed skin, a surgical mask, and goggles. This will keep any fluids from the animal from getting on you, which will keep you safe. If you are careful and work deliberately, you should be able to quickly snare your raccoon.

Oregon is a land filled with an impressive mixture of landscapes and wildlife. The state is consistently mild and wet in climate, but certain areas are prone to waves of intense heat or cold. The desert area, which takes up a significant portion of the east part of the state, is much drier than the regions around it. Oregon also has a variety of forested land, switching between coniferous woods to mixed forests and then back to deciduous trees. These areas of woodland are found throughout the state with the exceptions of desert and shrublands. The Cascade Mountains are found in Oregon, many of them glacial bound or inactive, ancient volcanoes. Despite the variety of habitats, the majority of animals in Oregon are considered small or medium in size.

That's not to say there aren't some big species in the state. Bison, elk, moose, pronghorn and multiple species of deer populate the region. The larger grazers are followed by a few large predators like grizzly bears, mountain lions, gray wolves, and Canada lynx. Though not really a large predator, the Canada lynx is the "transition" predator into small species like the bobcat.
