What Do I Do If a Squirrel Gets Inside my Bedroom Kitchen, or Other Part of My House?

You open the front door of your house one day, and a squirrel goes racing in. Maybe it is that the screen had a tear and the squirrel got into your home. Or, maybe you returned back from a vacation or from work to simply find that somehow a squirrel had gotten in your house. No matter how it got in all you want is it to be out.

Capturing a squirrel inside your home is risky business. You need to act quickly, but you also have the concern about the danger this animal poses. Most think of a squirrel is nothing more than a cute little rodent with a big bushy tail, but these animals pose a serious health risk to you. Not only do they scratch and claw, but they are the carriers of a number of diseases. All it takes is one scratch or bite and this animal can pass a disease or parasite that can do serious harm to you, a family member, or your pet.

Stay Calm

In situations like this, the first mistake that people make is to start panicking. They frantically run around terrified at what the squirrel will do. Understand that the more frantic you are the crazier the squirrel is going to act. So, settle down for a moment. Take a deep breath, and get prepared to take action.

Do This to Get It Out

You are going to need someone else to help you. Call a neighbor or friend and asked him to come over and assist you in capturing this animal. You also want to get yourself a large bag, like a laundry bag. Make sure it is not flimsy. This bag is going to hold a frantic squirrel that is going to be thrashing about. You needed to be something that is durable, so a garbage bag or mash laundry bag is not going to do the job. If you don't have a laundry bag, a laundry hamper that is made out of plastic or wood will suffice.

Put on clothing that will cover all exposed skin. This should include thick gloves, boots, a surgical mask, and goggles. You don't want to expose any of your skin to this animal. Get yourself a shovel or long stick as well.

Your objective will be to lead in the animal into the laundry basket, hamper, or bag. This is where you need the help of your friend. As you move the squirrel that direction, they need to be prepared to trap the animal once it gets inside.

Be methodical in your moments, not choppy. You want to seize control but not give the animal a chance to get away. If you can get it into the corner of your house, this may be the ideal situation. It will make it easier for you to lead it into the bag.

Once you have captured it, simply place the bag or hamper outside. Don't try to help the animal to get out. Let it do it on its own.

The state has a stunning sea on its upper western corner. This sea is named the Salish Sea, and it is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean filled with hundreds of islands and deep bays.
