As pigeons are non-migratory birds, when it starts becoming mating season they will start looking for a place to nest and lay eggs. People have encroached on their natural habitat to such an extent that their only option is to nest in the gardens or houses of people. 1. Your first option is to try and coax the pigeon out at the bottom of the chimney, they may not be able to fly up, but they can fly down. Birds generally fly towards a light source, so a flashlight should assist you in the endeavor. Shine the light at the bottom of the chimney and try to get the bird to fly towards it.
2. If your flashlight trick didn't work, you might need to help the pigeon exit at the bottom. Using a long stick, try to push the pigeon off of the smoke shelf, be careful not to push too hard as this might hurt the pigeon. Once you have them off of the shelf, they should be able to fly out at the bottom.
3. If you have a gas fireplace, you may have to remove it in order to get the bird out. If you are not able to do it yourself, a professional might have to be called in. Even though this might be an expensive undertaking, but your other option is leaving the bird to starve to death. This is a horrible idea, not just from an animal rights standpoint, but it will also lead to a rotting carcass stinking up your house.
