Raccoons are recognizable because of the black mask around their eyes that contrasts the light gray and white color of their face. They also have the familiar bushy tail with black rings. While raccoons have a cute appearance, they can be very annoying and destructive if they make their way into your home. So, how do we get rid of raccoons without killing them?

1. The quickest and most efficient way to get rid of raccoons is by trapping and relocating. The problem lies in the fact that most states have laws prohibiting trapping and relocating raccoons unless you have a permit or license. When selecting a live trap, size is important. The trap should be at least 12" x 12" x32" and it needs to be of solid construction. When it comes to bait, raccoons are omnivores so any food is acceptable. However, if you are trapping raccoons in the attic, no bait is needed. This is because raccoons in the attic are usually mothers with babies. It is important to keep the mother and babies together using a variety of trapping techniques. When relocating trapped raccoons it is recommended that they be released in a raccoon friendly environment at least 10 miles away. If this is impossible, get them at least five miles away. Here again, there are laws prohibiting release of raccoons on public land. If you choose to use the trap and relocate approach, you may want to consider hiring a wildlife removal expert.
