If you are sitting at the trap to try to catch a raccoon, you are probably looking for the very best bait to use. While raccoons are true omnivores, meaning they will eat just about anything, there are choices for bait that are significantly better than others. Here are some things you should consider when setting your trap.

Cheese

This is a common theme you will see. Raccoons have a very strong sense of smell. They see terribly, which is why they are nocturnal creatures. Because they would be doomed being out in the daylight, they hunt and forage during the night. There extremely strong smell helps them to be successful when they are out looking for food.

For this reason, using foods that have a strong odor to them is a good choice. This is where cheese makes for the perfect option. Cheese has such a strong odor, especially after it has been sitting out for six or seven hours. You may think that rotting cheese would deter a raccoon, but no worries here. It will only be more of an inducement to draw the raccoon into your trap.

Meat

Bread also works quite well. After leaving it outside for eight or nine hours, it will have a stronger odor. Plus, it will give off a different kind of scent, a sweet scent that could be your ticket for success.

Fruit

Like pastries, fruit can be the perfect choice for you. Oranges, strawberries, and bananas are sweet. They also last a lot longer and they have a strong enough odor, especially fruits like oranges. You can have a lot of success using these kinds of fruits, because they are sure to attract a raccoon with a sweet tooth.
