How do you remove a house mouse stuck in a garbage can or another place?

It does not happen to mouse often, but occasionally they will climb in someplace and find themselves trapped. By the time you discover them, they are usually in a state of panic. If this happens you probably want to get them out of that space as quickly as you can. Here are some scenarios of stuck mice and ways to remedy them.

In a dumpster or trashcan. Mice jump in looking for a tasty treat, and usually have a pile of garbage to use as stairs to climb out. In some cases, the trash shifts, or the can has been recently emptied and there is nothing for them to use to escape. If you can tip the can to allow them to run out this is the simplest solution. Often a dumpster will have a side door that can be easily opened to allow the mouse to run free. If neither of these solutions is possible, look for a branch, board, or cardboard box that can be placed inside the can or dumpster and provide a ramp to escape.

In a bucket. First cover the bucket, then take the bucket to an area where the mouse can run free. Tip the bucket over on its side.

In a pipe. If it is a water pipe like a drain, flush water down it for about 10 minutes. Mice are extremely powerful swimmers, and have been known to enter homes through water pipes and septic systems. All that water will wash it away. If it is a heat pipe, like the one to your furnace, carefully open your access door and it can leave. If you don't want it running loose, open the door and slide in a trap, close the door and wait!

In between walls. If you think you have a mouse stuck in your wall that is a tough situation. If it is an exterior wall go and search out the entry hole. Remember a mouse can fit in a quarter inch hole. When you find the hole, if you can fit an exclusion or box trap to it that should lure the mouse out. You can also enlarge the hole and remove the mouse (and the nest it probably has there). If it is not an exterior wall, you must cut a hole in your wall in the area you hear the mouse. Make the hole as small as possible, and again if you feel you can coax it out into a trap, do so. Otherwise you must go in after it!
