Pigeons are a common sight in densely populated, urban areas. Have you ever wondered why there are more pigeons in urban areas than in rural areas?

The reason for this is that there are over 400 million pigeons across the world. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have been bred as pets. This means that the pigeons are comfortable around humans and are quite happy to live side by side with them. The building of a busy city mimics the rock faces and cliffs of their native Europe, this means that they will build their nests anywhere close to a viable food source. People have become a major source of food for these feral pigeons, not only in the scraps of food that we leave behind, but also because so many people supply them with high quality food on a regular basis. There are people who feed these pigeons every single day, this leads to them returning to the same spots, in droves.

In less urban areas, they are dependent on the seeds that they can forage for themselves, this means that they are less inclined to return to the same spot every day. They consume seeds, fruit, leaves and even occasionally small invertebrates. They require about 30 ml of water daily, this means that they will not inhabit areas where there is not a water source.
